Next benchmark OGCM?

Tom Haine and Wenrui Jiang led a Town Hall meeting at the Ocean Sciences Meeting entitled “Democratize the Data: A New Way to Analyze Ocean Models”.

Take the survey on next-generation benchmark circulation models. And watch this space for results from the survey…

Abstract:

Ocean circulation models running on the latest supercomputers can cover the globe with resolutions of a few kilometers. These virtual ocean datasets are increasingly realistic, and provide insight into processes at scales that are inaccessible with conventional observations. The datasets are far too massive for individual researchers to download and analyze personal copies, however. To address this problem, researchers are developing new cloud-based, open-source, cyber-infrastructure resources to access and explore the data. These tools provide a new analysis paradigm that is scalable, accessible, and inclusive. The new paradigm democratizes access to ocean circulation model output. It will come to dominate the analysis of ocean and climate models.

This Town Hall discusses the issues, challenges, and opportunities in analyzing massive ocean circulation model solutions. New public tools are demonstrated to interactively explore and visualize the virtual ocean datasets. New free analysis software and workflows are exhibited and explained. Town Hall participants will gain hands-on experience using these resources. We will also discuss future activities, including priorities for expansion and enhancement of the data analysis tools. And we will brainstorm priorities for next-generation benchmark ocean circulation model and ocean biogeochemical model solutions.
